Abstract

The authors consider N scalar-matrix pairs (x,//i, Y//i//j//-//1) and look for certain rational functions Y(x) that interpolate these pairs. The solutions are parametrized in terms of the MacMillan degree of Y. There is no a priori properness requirement imposed on Y. It is shown that in case of interpolation at a single point of multiplicity N, the corresponding block Lowner matrix reduces to a block Hankel matrix. This shows that interpolation theory, as developed previously (1987) by the authors, generalizes the well-known realization theory.
