    Abstract

The effect on fission fragment anisotropies of the alignment of ground-state nuclear spin with the nuclear deformation axis has been investigated for the reactions 31P+ 176Lu and 29Si+ 178Hf, through measurements at a range of energies spanning the fusion barrier. Calculations which reproduce the anisotropies for the 29Si+ 178Hf reaction only reproduce the anisotropies for 31P+ 176Lu when the correlation of the seven units of ground-state spin of 176Lu with the nuclear deformation axis is correctly taken into account.
