Abstract

The effect on fission fragment anisotropies of the alignment of ground-state nuclear spin with the nuclear deformation axis has been investigated for the reactions ³¹P+ ¹⁷⁶Lu and ²⁹Si+ ¹⁷⁸Hf, through measurements at a range of energies spanning the fusion barrier. Calculations which reproduce the anisotropies for the ²⁹Si+ ¹⁷⁸Hf reaction only reproduce the anisotropies for ³¹P+ ¹⁷⁶Lu when the correlation of the seven units of ground-state spin of ¹⁷⁶Lu with the nuclear deformation axis is correctly taken into account.
