Abstract
The effect of mechanical activation of a coal on its subsequent combustion in air and pyrolysis in argon is investigated. A sample of Collie coal is crushed to <1 mm to facilitate mill loading. Samples are ball-milled at room temperature under approximately 100 Pa for up to 1000 h in a tumbling ball mill using four steel balls giving a ball:powder mass ratio of 40:1.
