Abstract
The structural changes which take place on wet-milling α-Fe2O3 powder in vacuum have been investigated by neutron diffraction. The transformation of rhombohedral α-Fe2O3 to the fcc Fe3O4-type spinel structure has been monitored during the wet-milling process. The refinements are consistent with the occurrence of vacancies in both the tetrahedral and the octahedral sites of the milled, nonstoichiometric Fe3-xO4 product. The structure and properties of the mechanochemically synthesized Fe3-xO4 allow the defect phase to be distinguished from both γ-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4.
