Abstract
This entry briefly sets out the history of medical ethics in the West to illuminate what preceded bioethics. The Hippocratic Tradition, particularly the Hippocratic Oath, and the new discourse of medical ethics that accompanied the emergence of the modern profession of medicine provide the focus of this discussion.
