Abstract
Customary practices of dispute mediation and resolution have long provided informal and locally legitimate forms of redress and justice for Timorese communities. Drawing on the ethnography of Meto society in West Timor, this paper explores a range of cultural approaches surrounding conflict resolution among constituent smallholder farming communities. Case studies of warfare, marriage and land disputes are presented. Consideration is given to adapting forms of customary dispute resolution within state regulatory procedures.
