Abstract

Alan Gamlen is an expert on human migration. He is Associate Professor of Geography
at Monash University in Melbourne, and a Research Associate at Oxford University’s Centre
on Migration, Policy and Society. He has held previous appointments at Stanford University,
Germany’s Max Planck Society, and the Japan Centre for Area Studies. He is a former Director
of the Australian Population and Migration Research Centre. Alan is the author of Human
Geopolitics: States, Emigrants and the Rise of Diaspora Institutions (Oxford University Press,
2019), winner of the Distinguished Book Award for Best Book on Ethnicity and Migration, from
the International Studies Association. He holds a Doctorate in Geography from the University of
Oxford, where he studied as a New Zealand Top Achiever Scholar.
