    Abstract

The article form part of a series of essays on english keywords in India collated in a special issue of South Asia. the keyword, Mobile, I argue, accommodates a cluster of words that relate upon introduction of mobile phones in India. Mobile is both an everyday descriptor and a referent for cultural and economic phenomena which are at once reinforcing and subverting "traditional" structures of authority and cultural practices. The article details some of these concerns, drawing on ethnographic inquiry and cultural analysis.
