N2 - A fuel-free attitude control system for a spinning solar sail which utilizes solar radiation pressure was developed. This system consists of thin-film devices attached to the sail that electrically control their optical parameters such as reflectivity, and the attitude control torque is generated by switching their optical parameters synchronizing with spin motion. Attitude control torque model for a sail of arbitrary shape and deformation was derived. The control system was implemented for Japanese interplanetary solar sail demonstration spacecraft IKAROS and the on-orbit attitude control performance was evaluated.
