Abstract

It has been demonstrated both theoretically [1] and experimentally [2] that the presence of Alfven eigenmodes (AEs) can lead to anomalous ion transport and enhanced losses of energetic ions. Recently it has been suggested that compressional AEs can also cause anomalous heating of bulk plasma [3]. It is vital, therefore, that the effects of AEs are understood. Here we report on recent progress made in the measurement, identification and theoretical modelling of AEs on the MAST spherical tokamak.
