Modulational instability in nonlocal nonlinear Kerr media

    Abstract

    The modulational stability properties of plane waves in nonlinear media with a general nonlocal Kerr nonlinearity were studied. An analytical expression was derived for the growth rate of the instability for arbitrary response profiles. It was found that in the self-focusing case, the plane wave solution is always unstable.
