Australian Foreign Affairs has taken on a tough task. It offers a distinctly Australian platform for timely, in-depth and original analysis about the challenges and opportunities in the difficult international environment ahead. An independent foreign policy is what any self-respecting country needs. But it can only be as effective as the ideas for action that go with it. The first tranche of essays, however articulate, could have gone further to explain in practical terms what is to be done.
