Abstract

This Special Issue seeks to celebrate the career of one of the leading proponents of a 'multi-scalar' isotope approach, Prof. Julia Lee-Thorp. In a famous 2008 article that has now been cited nearly 700 times, Prof. Lee-Throp wrote 'The application of stable light isotope ratio analysis to past human diets has by now reached a certain level of maturity' (pp. 925). It is no exaggeration to say that she can be credited with much of this maturity. From being, alongside Nicholas van der Merwe and Judy Sealy, at the heart of key isotopic archaeological and palaeoanthropological innovations in Cape Town in the 1980s, she has gone on to train three generations of scientists in the field and provided significant support and opportunities for women in STEM (Science, Technology, Medicine, Engineering).
