    Abstract

We study light transmission through a metal film perforated with an array of square apertures of varying size. We combine near-field scanning optical microscopy with confocal microscopy to identify surface plasmon modes and propagating hole modes in the different size apertures. We also perform spectral measurements to reveal the complex characteristics of light transmission through the chirped subwavelength apertures. (
