    Abstract

    The Australian Federal Governments recent attempts to deregulate tertiary student fees and reduce subsidies for new Commonwealth-supported students have led several commentators to compare Australias higher education system unfavourably with Germanys, focusing particularly on the fact that German higher education institutions do not currently charge tuition fees.
