Abstract
Sometimes, in both popular and academic literature, a toponym is attributed to someone who did not bestow the name. Such attributions are based on mere conjecture, folk-etymology, or are perpetuated from earlier unsubstantiated claims. An article by Joel MacManus (2021), on the New Zealand news website Stuff, claims Australia was almost named New Zealand. This article investigates MacManus claim.
