    Abstract

The existence and stability of nonlinear localized waves in periodic media was analysed by means of the Kronig-Penney model. The existence of a novel type of stable nonlinear band-gap localized state was deduced, and a generic mechanism for the oscillatory wave instabilities associated with the band-gap resonances was obtained. The analysis included a study of band structure, localized waves and linearity defects by use of wave equations, matrix algebra and frequency response plots.
