Abstract
Instructions for travellers on the collection of archaeological objects were published in the first 1874 edition of Notes and Queries on Anthropology. The archives of the Royal Geographical Society, the Royal Anthropological Institute, and the British Museum were searched to investigate what influence Notes and Queries on Anthropology had on pioneering field archaeologists in the Pacific at the turn of the 20th century, and how this contributed to the beginnings of prehistoric archaeological practice. This paper assesses the archaeological legacies left to us from the expeditions of three early pioneers: Frederick William Christian (18671934), William Scoresby Routledge (18591939) and Katherine Routledge (18661935).
