Nuclear non-proliferation and arms control: reviewing the Asian context

    Research output: Contribution to conferencePaper

    Abstract

In this paper, which has the aim of outlining aspects of the research conducted on the dynamics of arms control and nuclear non-proliferation as part of the Asia-Pacific the ANU MacArthur Asia Security Initiative Project, I examine some of the emerging approaches to nuclear non-proliferation and arms control currently underway in the Asia-Pacific region. These include management strategies that promote and maintain mutual deterrence relationships and elimination strategies that entail the abolishment of nuclear weapons toward a non-nuclear world. The emergence of such strategies is considered to be linked to the shift of power in the region that is currently rebalancing the global nuclear order in ways that make it more dependent upon developments in Asia rather than outside.
