On exchange marriage: "Wata sata" marriages in southern Punjab, Pakistan

Abstract

The article deals with wata sata marriages in the village of Shahpur Phull, District Lodhran, the province of Punjab, Pakistan. It describes the nature and extent of wata sata (exchange marriages) and highlights how it creates a complex network of relationships. Affinal and blood relations are often merged and categorized under the same genealogical position. The mutual exchange of women not only increases economic cooperation but also intensifies shared rights and obligations within other spheres and may sometimes involve the obligation of retaliatory violence.
