Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine Malaysian development experience in historical perspective with emphasis on the nature of policy choices in the context of the rapid internationalisation of the world economy. It is organised as follows: Section 2 surveys Malaysian economic policy since independence, in order to place the ensuing discussion in context and to delineate the key policy shifts as guidance for the study of internationalisation and its developmental implications. Overall growth trends are surveyed in the context of the ongoing process of internationalisation of the economy in Section 3. The implications of economic expansion for domestic employment and real wages, and poverty and income inequality are examined in Section 4. Section 5 concludes.
