Abstract
Volume 43 of the Flora of Australia introduces the Poaceae (Grasses). The grasses, with about 1300 species, are the third largest family of flowering plants in Australia, ranking behind the Myrtaceae (1858 spp.) and Fabaceae s. str. (1402 spp.), and ahead of Asteraceae (1221 spp.). They are found throughout the country, in virtually all habitats, from the wettest to the driest, from sea-level to the tops of the highest ranges. In many parts of the country they form the dominant vegetation. This is particularly so in the hummock and tussock grasslands of eremaean regions, and the (now largely modified) grasslands and grassy woodlands of temperate regions.
