    Abstract

    Beginning in the 1950s and continuing into the 1960s, Papua New Guineas state system was imposed on thousands of ethnic and social groups throughout the countrys territory. Modern political institutions developed and refined over hundreds of years elsewhere were introduced to PNG in less than 20 years. The first national elections were held in 1964 for the National parliament and a mere eleven years later, PNG was granted its independence from Australia.
