N2 - To mark the National Carillon’s 55th anniversary, Senior Carillonist Thomas Laue will perform a selection of the 55 carillon ensemble works—13 original compositions and 42 arrangements—alongside Veronica Bailey (marimba) and Tom Fell (saxophone) as part of the highlight one-hour concert segment at the 'Chime In: A Carillon Celebration' event on Saturday 11 October 2025. Audience numbers are anticipated to exceed well over 2,000, representing the largest gathering of people and audiences at the National Carillon since its inaugural official opening by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1970.
Each of the ensemble works explore one or more of the following themes: 'United identities: Australian indigeneity, regionalism, and multiculturalism'; 'Our natural environment’; 'Spirituality and music in contemporary Australia'. The music transcends the traditional solo performance format of carillons worldwide, with the addition of rich instrumentation.
The concert features four world premiere performances of brand new works for Parillax Trio, composed by four of the most innovative and highly recognised Australian women composers of their respective times, with these internationally acclaimed artists collectively earning prestigious national honours including Orders of Australia, ARIA nominations, major international awards, and recognition from institutions worldwide spanning from the Sydney Olympic Games to European opera houses: Dulcie Holland AO, Elena Kats-Chernin AO, Peggy Polias, and Nat Bartsch. The concert will also feature iconic music by Midnight Oil, Bruce Woodley (The Seekers) and Dobe Newton (Bushwackers).
Together, the concert offers a vibrant soundscape of stories and shared hopes, inviting audiences to celebrate harmony, peace, and connection through this 'Aussie mosaic' — from unofficial anthems ('I am Australian'), through songs of unity ('You're the Voice') recognised around the world, to world premieres of works by some of the most recognised and decorated Australian composers.
