Abstract
Demographic, economic, social, and administrative changes have all had a role in fertility transition. Fertility decline has never been an unconscious social process; advocacy and organisation have been important. The fertility transition has been a single global event and is an aspect of the creation of a global economy and society. Better contraception had a significant role after 1960 in developing and developed countries. The transition is far from over among large parts of the world's population, especially south Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Stationary global population in the next century will probably be followed by a fall in population.
