    Abstract

The figure of the traveller loomed large in the Greek imagination. To these we might add Herodotus. The historian's self-mytholigising plays on this same, diffuse connection between wide-ranging travels and a particular brand of cultural prestige. he stands out as a trailblazer, providing a paradigm for how to convey the firsthand experience of travel - how to describe places visited and things seen - in the newly-emergent mode of prose writing.
