Abstract
Exhibition held in King's College London on the Denmans from 3 July to 25 September 2017. Through manuscripts, books, film, photographs and objects the exhibition explores the political, cultural and imperial interests of Australias fifth governor-general and his wife, against the backdrop of a world on the brink of war. Thomas, Lord Denman, and his wife, the irrepressible Gertrude Denman ('Trudie'), resided in Australia from July 1911 to May 1914. This exhibition tells the story of this imposing power couple and their circle, intertwining it with the broader narrative of early 20th century Australia and its changing relationship with the UK. It includes material from many of Australias leading public institutions, including the National Library of Australia, the National Museum of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia, as well as items from private collections and from the Foyle Special Collections Library and the Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives here at King's. Most of the exhibits have never been displayed in the UK before.
