Abstract
It is one of the enduring ironies of contemporary Asian art that most intra-Asian conversations are mediated via non-Asian locations such as Australia and the USA. As a post-graduate student in an Asian country (I studied Art Criticism at the Faculty of Fine Arts in baroda, India over 1992-95), I found scarce mention of modernist or contemporary art in the Asian region in the syllabus. We were aware of the history of modern art in India, and we were schooled in the history of what we called modern art by which was understood the history of modern art in Europe and the USA. I first encountered modern and contemporary Asian art in Australia.
