Abstract

Emphasis has shifted from low nutrition as an outcome of poverty to the former causing poverty to persist. At low levels of nutrition, workers are incapable of doing hard manual labour. Hence their productivity is low, implying low wages, low purchasing power and, therefore, low nutrition, completing a vicious cycle of deprivation. This chapter identifies poverty nutrition traps (PNT) and assesses how pervasive they are in rural India. Under certain conditions, nutritional adequacy is a prior condition for raising incomes.
