Abstract

Polytrauma patients with abdominal injuries show a more severe injury pattern and mortality compared to polytrauma patients without visceral trauma. This higher overall mortality results from a higher early mortality (during the first 24hrs after the beginning of treatment) due to uncontrollable abdominal bleeding. During the further clinical course the polytrauma patients with visceral trauma show a higher rate of organ failure usually with pulmonal and septical complications. In our study group the term long-term outcome of polytrauma patients with visceral trauma is slightly worse compared to polytrauma patients without visceral trauma. The overall outcome is worse due to a higher early mortality compared to polytrauma patients without visceral trauma.
