    Abstract

We compare the third-order nonlinear optical properties of several π-conjugated polymers: poly(p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV), which is a `rigid rod' type of a molecule, substituted poly(p-phenylenevinylenes) representing the `hairy rod' structures, a `ladder' type poly(p-phenylene) polymer and a novel conjugated polymer: polyindenofluorene having a `picket fence' structure. The real and imaginary parts of the nonlinear refractive index and two-photon loss merit factors at 800 nm have been derived from the femtosecond Z-scan measurements of the polymers in solutions. The data on the modulus of nonlinear refractive index |n 2| have been obtained from degenerate four-wave mixing in films of the neat polymers and the composites of PPV.
