    Abstract

    Ideas and information were the social currency of the expanding public sphere of eighteenth-century Britain, and by the Romantic period the production and consumption of knowledge in the form of public lecturing testified to an economic and emotional investment in knowledge of all kinds, as well as in knowledge per se.
