Abstract
For a long time, Canadians have felt safer than Australians, who have maintained a more hard-nosed sense of the risk of danger. This attack in Ottawa will generate a profound shock to Canada's sense of identity, writes John Blaxland. Australia and Canada are the two countries that in many ways most resemble each other. Both are similarly sized, new-world, federal, bicameral, and multicultural Westminster parliamentary democracies. They're both open societies that have taken pride in their civil liberties and freedoms - characteristics that have made them extraordinarily attractive for migrants from around the world.
