    Abstract

Double insertion reactions of the thioalkynes MeC≡CS-p-Tol and (MeC≡CSCH2CH2)2S with benzyne-nickel(O) complexes have been used to prepare the 2,3-di(thioether) naphthalene species 2,3-(p-TolS)2-l,4-Me2C10H4 (4) and the 2,3-naphthotrithiacyclononane 2,3-S(C2H4S)2-1,4-Me2C10H 4 (5), respectively. Both naphthothioethers act as ligands toward ruthenium, and the products of the reactions of 4 and 5 with [RuCl2(PPh3)4], viz., [(PPh3)-{2,3-(p-TolS)2-1,4-Me2C10H 4}Ru(μ-Cl)3RuCl(PPh3)2] (6) and [RuCl2{2,3-S(C2H4S)21,4-Me2 C10H4κS,S,S}(PPh3)] (7), have been isolated and structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. The RuII,RuII dinuclear complex 6 exhibits two successive one-electron voltametric oxidations akin to complex [Cl (PPh3)2Ru(μ-Cl)3Ru(PPh3)3 ], and has similar potentials.
