Abstract
As the dominant infectious disease of tropical countries, human malaria has an immediacy that earns it much attention in the clinical literature. It is also an unlikely disease, and as such is scientifically fascinating. Protozoan parasites, in very small numbers, somehow manage to injure a range of tissues and upset cellular biochemistry in others at a time when their invasiveness is limited to red cells.
