Abstract
Samoan Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa — the first female Head of Government in Samoa and the Pacific region — faced sexist heckling during a vote of non-confidence in March 2025. Despite widespread public support and her strong political lineage, gendered attacks persist. Fiame’s experience highlights the enduring influence of patriarchal norms and the systemic barriers to gender equality in Pacific politics.
