Abstract

The REMIX1 Exhibition was held at the Foundation Suzanne Bastien Gallery in Port Vila Vanuatu. It was co-curated by Maya Haviland, Daniel Owen, Marcel Meltherong, Lina Ariki (Co-Director of the Foundation Suzanne Bastien) and Kaitip Kami (Curator, Vanuatu National Museum). The exhibition explored how ni-Vanuatu artists and cultural practioners have worked with traditional knowledge and styles to create contemporary art works and to show case different artists, forms and works. It include historical works from the Vanuatu National Museum, a survey of contemporary art from ni-Vanuatu artists and their work related to kastom knowledge, and new works created for the exhibition and as part of the pilot Artists Access Project to the Vanuatu Cultural Centre. It included visual art, performance, and installation. The REMIX1 exhibition was the first public exhibition resulting from the Rimix - negotiating kastom and contemporary art in Vanuatu project.
