Abstract

Building on our experiences in shaping collaborative, impact-driven R&D agendas and outcomes, this policy paper makes 5 recommendations, responding directly to the Strategic Examination of R&D Discussion Paper’s focus.

The remainder of our submission provides the background thinking and references underpinning our recommendation for a systems approach to reimagining the R&D landscape. We offer some context for our response by outlining the purpose and activities of the School of Cybernetics as the Australian National University’s new radically transdisciplinary ‘start-up’ school based in the ANU College of Systems and Society.

Recommendations:
1. Create Transdisciplinary Field of Research (FoR) Codes for Tracking, Funding and Reviewing
2. Foster Stronger Links Between Research and Industry
3. Incentivise Interdisciplinary R&D through Allocated Scheme Funds
4. Reconfigure Evaluation and Oversight Panels
5. Enhance Coordination and Transparency Across Programs
