Abstract

Some core-collapse supernovae show two prominent peaks, the main radioactive peak and the so-called shock cooling light curve (SCL). SCLs come from the cooling of shock-heated ejecta after shock breakout and usually last for a few days after explosion. We present the early observations and analysis of the double-peaked Type IIb Supernova (SN IIb) 2021zby. TESS captured the prominent SCL of SN 2021zby with its continuous 30-min cadence light curve, starting from nearly the time of the first light to the radioactive peak, making it the 2nd SNe with SCL covered by high cadence survey after SN 2017jgh. Using a multi-band model fit, we find that the progenitor of SN 2021zby is most likely to have a polytropic index of n = 3/2, i.e. a red supergiant (RSG) or yellow supergiant (YSG), with an envelope mass of ~ 0.3-3.0 M⊙ and an envelope radius of ~ 50-350 R⊙.
