    Abstract

The use of synchronized data provided by Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) installed on system buses in a Wide Area Monitoring, Protection and Control Systems (WAMPAC) has shown to be promising to be used by a Wide-Area Damping Controller (WADC) to improve the well-known inter-area oscillation modes in power systems. However, recent research has demonstrated the vulnerability of PMU measurements to certain types of cyber-attacks such as Denial-of-Service attack that can interfere the proper operation of system devices that rely on reliable data from PMUs as a typical WADC. This research aims to evaluate critical shutdown times for a WADC subject to failures in the communication channels that can compromise its operation. Case studies of the IEEE 7-bus system are presented and discussed.
