    Abstract

This chapter explores the inextricable nature of rock music, sound recording technologies, workplaces and recordists. As such, the history of rock music may be read as a history of technological and processual development; the canonisation of the sites, recordists and technologies associated with rock music exists in parallel to the established rock canon. Firstly, this chapter looks at key sites of rock music recordings, to include Abbey Road studios, Hansa Tonstudios and Southern Studios. Secondly, the chapter focuses on recordist agency, exploring the role of the rock recordist with focus on mythology, the commercialisation of recording process and lineage. Finally, the chapter responds to technological iconicity and the symbolic values embodied in sound recording technologies.
