    Abstract

This is a tense thriller and also a child's-eye family drama. The novel, dedicated to Tora Orde-Powlett, celebrates the strength and fatigue of female writers and working mothers. The book praises the figure of the mother-courage 'Yasmin', defined by the other truckers as 'Gutsy Lady' [Lady with the liver, literally 'gut'], able to face the impossible to save her children, in this case, the deaf daughter Ruby, in a land with neither sounds nor light of the Arctic Polar Circle in Alaska
