    Abstract

    For any country with strong stakes in a rules-based order, China's recent aggression in the Indo-Pacific should set off alarm bells. It's time for new thinking about national preparedness – as Australia has learned in recent years. Key Points: Germany can learn a lot from the sea change in Australia’s China policy. Regional or internal shocks quickly become global – so it is essential to plan ahead. In its response to China, Germany should apply its economic leverage.
