Abstract
Education is the transfer of knowledge from teachers to students. The continuity of scientific tradition and its learning in educational institutions and societies is dependent on understanding, the learning models employed by teachers and the education materials they use. It is often assumed that Islam, based on an incorrect understanding of its teachings, is one cause of continuing gender inequality. Gender inequality in pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) occurs primarily through the educational process in pesantren that implement gender segregation in learning methods and their curriculum. This article examines the education of women in Islam, the development of education in schools, pro and contra of gender segregation in education and the reality of women in pesantren. This is certainly different from that carried out in the educational institution was established specifically for women. Education for women who performed in schools, where the schools also provide education for boys and implemented separately, of course, has its own implications for women in terms of the achievement of learning outcomes. The implementation of gender segregation in education raises two different opinions. Arguments supporting in education raises two different opinions. Arguments supporting the implementation of gender segregation in education has a reason that this system will support student learning based on their gender. Boys and girls have different learning styles based on their natural condition. As for those who do not agree with the implementation of gender segregation has also pointed out the reason that this system can lead to relationships between the rigid and unnatural men and women. Moreover, they will experience actual life outside the school is also not seperate between men and women. May eventually be justified even is there is the notion that segregation in education will limit access, participation, control and benefit of education for women, so women will experience inequality in education.
