Abstract
Much has been written about Chinas post-Cultural Revolution jerry-built traditions, be they cultural, intellectual or physical. Newly refurbished old sites, cities, streets and shops have proliferated. Long before this latest wave of constructed tradition crested, however, scholars wrote perceptively on the subject of how Chinese literary, historical and cultural associations and places have enjoyed a particular symbiosis over the centuries.
