Abstract

Recently, the super lightweight artificial aggregates (SLA) have been developed in Japan. Using SLA, the shear capacity of super lightweight concrete (SLC) beams has been examined with changing the specific gravity of concrete. The effect of conventional shear reinforcement and polyvinyl alcohol short fiber was also examined. As the result, the following findings have been obtained. By maintaining compressive strength of concrete in normal strength level, the shear strength of super lightweight concrete beams per compressive strength is significantly improved. The shear reduction rate (70%), in JSCE code, for lightweight aggregates concrete is not suitable because it is dependent on the specific gravity of concrete. In addition, it has been confirmed that the shear capacity and deformation ability of super lightweight concrete beams are improved by conventional shear reinforcement and polyvinyl alcohol short fiber reinforcement.
