    Abstract

The August 2009 special issue of Journal of Optics A: Pure and Applied optics presents some of the papers delivered at the 4th International Conference in Singular Optics, which took place on 15-20 September 2008 in Alushta, Ukraine. A way of grouping the main topics covered by this special issue includes optical vortices and circulations, singular polarization optics, singularities in modern optics, singularities in classical optics, and applications of singular optics. There were several important developments in what is recognized as Singular Optics, particularly phase singularities and optical vortices, in the 1940s and 1950s. Spatial shifts such as the Goos Hänchen shift are also described in the special issue. Wolter's methodology, in using the interference minima to get a precise physical picture and improved experimental accuracy, are also discussed in Singular Optics.
