    Abstract

Slow Violence is a series of large-scale embroidered maps of the 2019-2020 Black Summer bushfires in NSW, ACT and Victoria. It translates data that visualises fire damage to vegetation by hand-stitching vivid coloured thread stitched into thermal blankets. This highly detailed technique, and the symbolism of an emergency blanket, encompasses a repetitive practice that simultaneously destroys and repairs its grounding substrate to convey the concept of 'slow violence'.

The works have been show at the Art Gallery of South Australia (2021), Galerie pompom, Sydney (2022), Canberra Contemporary Art Space (2023), and QUT Art Museum, Brisbane (2024).
