    Abstract

The media is important in producing and consolidating stereotypes about social groups, because it arguably influences our perception of the world around us. It can have the role of maintaining or challenging social divisions and prejudices. This chapter examines the representations of social class in a number of media texts, focusing particularly on magazines and films in the context of France. I analyse how written media in the form of two politically different magazines reproduces some dominant discourses on social class in their coverage of recent events in France. Visual media in the form of three recent films provides an alternative portrayal of social classes and identities in France by rejecting dominant discourses, especially those related to the working class.
